Dr. de Oliveira’s research focuses on two main strands: (I) the teaching and learning of emergent to advanced bilinguals (EABs) in the content areas and (II) teacher education for EABs, advocacy, and social justice. Within her first strand, she examines the language challenges of teaching and learning the content areas by EABs. One of her main areas of focus is second language writing. Within her second strand, she investigates the preparation of all teachers to work with and advocate for EABs, including mainstream content area teachers and second language specialists. Her interdisciplinary research work has drawn upon systemic functional linguistics to investigate issues related to content and language integration in mainstream content area classrooms and teacher preparation for such work.
